We arrived on the island of Kos late afternoon on Friday, September 12. After a harrowing taxi ride, we arrived in Kos itself. Our hotel, the Intercontinental was right on the shore about 100 yards from the Marina that had the Moorings base. We checked out the boat first thing, of course. The Moorings office was closed but we found all the staff working on the boats that had just returned. A kid from Minneapolis showed us our boat, the Arethoussa (longest, hardest name in the Marina). Other than the heads smelling pretty bad, it was a great boat. We took care of the heads the next day. The boats, by contract, don’t get underway until 1500 the next day. We negotiated leaving as early as we could the next day. This turned out to be a good move because we had to beat into the wind all the way to our first destination. Leaving early got us into the bay in time to enjoy sunset and ahead of all but one other boat.

Satisfied with the boat and that we could leave when ready, we walked across the street from the Marina to a traditional Greek dinner. Weather was great so we ate outside. Everyone got a much needed good night’s sleep. I stayed up a bit to read the sailing guide and study the chart. This helped a lot when we planned the trip with the Moorings staff the next day.

Saturday, September 13

From the Moorings base in Kos, to Ormas Palionisos, Nisos Kalimos (37N 02.3, 26E 58.5)
We got to the Moorings base about 0830. Mark and I started checking out the boat and doing the Moorings inventory. Bev and Nancy got the luggage to the pier and then went to a conveniently located supermarket at the end of the pier. In retrospect, we bought way too much food. There are great stores even on the smallest islands, and food is relatively cheap. We should have just bought enough for a couple days and then replenished as we went.
